To provide a method for producing a uniform thick vitrified carbon compact having slight defects such as pores by laminating thin-plate-like half- hardened compacts of a phenol resin having a solvent content within a specific range, hot-pressing the laminate to fuse the laminate and firing and carbonizing the fused laminate at a specific temperature.
A thin-plate-like half hardened formed bodies are laminated and hot-pressed at 100-200°C under 10-300 kg/cm2 pressure to provide a hardened body and the hardened body is fired in an inert gas at ≥800°C in the method for producing a thick vitrified carbon compact. The content of a solvent in the half-hardened compact is within a range of 5-25 wt.%. The firing and carbonizing temperature is ≥800°C. The phenol resin is preferably the one obtained by adding hexamethylenetetramine as a hardening agent to a novolak resin. The phenol resin is dissolved in a solvent, and subjected to a casting molding or a film casting to form a thin plate shape, and the thin plate shape product is heated to evaporate the solvent and to provide the half-hardened formed body. The solvent is a ≤3C alcohol, and if necessary other solvents and a mold-release agent can be added thereto. The amount of the hexamethylenetetramine based on the novolak resin is preferably 5-12 wt.%.
