Abstract:
To obtain a thioglycolic acid alkyl ester having an action for preventing the photoembrittlement of plastics in a high space time yield without discharging polluted water by employing an azeotropic esterificaion reaction and a basic ion exchange resin.
This method for producing a thioglycolic acid alkyl ester comprises heating the mixture of thioglycolic acid, an alcohol and an acid catalyst, simultaneously distilling off the produced water by an azeotropic distillation method using a water-separating device, if suitably, mechanically separating the acid catalyst, and subsequently passing the left reaction mixture through a basic ion exchanger to remove thioglycolic acid.
