Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound in high purity by stereoselectively hydrogenating isocamphylcyclohexanone with an inexpensive ruthenium- containing catalyst in the presence of a base and an amine.
SOLUTION: (A) 3-Isocamphylcyclohexanone of the formula is hydrogenated with (B) a ruthenium-phosphine complex catalyst in the presence of (C) a base having an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal and (D) an amine to obtain (E) trans-3-isocamphylcyclohexanol. The produced component E is a component essential for the development of fragrance like a sandalwood oil. The component B is RuH2(PPh3)4, RuHCl(PPh3)4, RuCl2(PPh3)4, etc.
