PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound having long chain aliphatic group in high yield and high purity by using tertiary butyl alcohol as a reaction solvent in reacting an aldehyde with formaldehyde corresponding to the aimed compound in the presence of alkaline substance.
CONSTITUTION: A compound (raw material) expressed by the formula RCH2CHO (R is 6-22C linear or branched aliphatic group) is mixed with formaldehyde in an amount of preferably 3-8 times mol, especially 5.5-6.5 times mol in tertiary butyl alcohol of ≥0.1 times wt., preferably ≥3 times wt., in the presence of an alkaline substance of preferably 1-5 times mol, especially 3-4 times mol preferably at 30-40°C. Next, the reaction system is heated at 55-70°C to afford the objective compound expressed by the formula RC(CH2OH)3, useful as a base agent of hair cosmetic or skin cosmetic, etc., emulsifier or lubricant, etc., in high yield and high purity.
