PURPOSE: To develop a polishing compd. having excellent characteristics by forming a molding consisting of a powder mixture composed of Co having a rugged surface and metal carbide into a mold, then turning over the molding and forming a hard layer having particles of diamond or cubic crystal BN on the surface having a rugged surface of a sintering method.
CONSTITUTION: An annular cylindrical sleeve 10 is mounted at a base 12 having a part 14 projecting upward and a slurry 20 consisting of methyl cellulose-contg. water suspended with the hard metal carbide and Co powder is put into the sleeve and is heated to 50 to 100°C, to gel the methyl cellulose. The base 12 is removed from the sleeve 10 and the sleeve 10 is turned over to form plural groove 22 formed of projecting parts 14 on a front surface 24. Next, a slurry 26 consisting of the methyl cellulose-contg. water suspended with the particulates of the diamond is injected into the front surface having the groove 22 and is heated at 50 to 100°C, to gel the methyl cellulose and thereafter, the gel is subjected to high-pressure sintering at a temp. of 1400 to 1600°C under a pressure of 25 to 70 kilobar. The polishing compd. is thus produced.
