PURPOSE: To produce an ultrathin membrane having a very high ion exchange capacity and excellent self-supporting properties and flexibility by using an associate of an amphiphilic compound as the reaction site.
CONSTITUTION: A dispersion having the property of forming a bimolecular membrane with a monomer containing a quaternary ammonium salt group and at least three radical-polymerizable groups is cast over a base to form a liquid film. The solvent of the dispersion is evaporated from the liquid film, and the monomer contained in the obtained laminated film is polymerized, while the amphiphilic compound is extracted from the film. Because the reaction site is formed from the amphiphilic compound having the property of forming a bimolecular membrane and the radical polymerization of the monomer having an ion exchange group is performed in this site, the obtained thin film is a laminate composed of ultrathin membranes each having a basic thickness of the order of molecular level, and the density of the effectively functioning exchange groups becomes very large. Further, the reduction of the thickness to the order of several microns is possible without detriment to the flexibility.
