To obtain the subject high-purity compound without the need of any purification process by adding specific additive(s) to an unsaturated alcohol followed by sulfation with SO3 gas to effect sulfating mainly the hydroxyl group of the unsaturated alcohol.
(B)At least one kind of additive selected from ester compounds of the formula R2COO(CH2CH2O)n'COR3 (R2 and R3 are each a 1-22C straight- chain or branched alkyl, etc.; (n') is the average addition number of moles of ethylene oxide: 1-400), ether compounds of the formula R4O(CH2CH2O)n2R5 (R4 and R5 are each a 1-10C straight-chain or branched alkyl, H, etc.; (n2) is same as (n')) and glycols of the formula HO(CH2CH2O)n3 ((n3) is same as (n')) is added to (A) an unsaturated bond-bering higher alcohol (pref. palmitoleyl alcohol) followed by sulfation with SO3 gas and then neutralization with a basic substance to obtain the objective ester salt of the formula R1-OSO3M [R1 is a 1-22C straight-chain or branched unsaturated hydrocarbon group; M is an alkali (alkaline earth) metal, ammonium, etc.].
