PURPOSE: To obtain the aimed substance, by sulfonating a mixture of a saturated and an unsaturated fatty acid lower alkyl esters to give sulfonated substances, from which the unreacted saturated fatty acid lower alkyl ester is efficiently separated in the presence of a separating auxiliary at low temperature.
CONSTITUTION: An unsaturated fatty acid lower alkyl ester and a saturated fatty acid lower alkyl is sulfonated, then neutralized and hydrolyzed. The reaction mixture after the hydrolysis is incorporated with 1W5C alcohol and a sorbitan fatty acid or glycerin fatty acid ester having ≤4 HLB and subjected to phase separated at 40W120°C into an oily layer containing the unreacted saturated fatty acid lower alkyl ester and a water layer containing the unsaturated fatty acid lower alkyl ester sulfonate to give the aimed substance.
USE: Useful as a surface active agent having improved foaming power, washing power, soaking power and good rinsing properties obtained by blending the titled substance with a saturated fatty acid alkyl ester sulfonate.
