Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide a method for producing uranium metal executable at the m.p. of uranium or below.
CONSTITUTION: Uranium chloride 19 is reacted with either 22 magnesium, solium or calcium in the presence of a molten salt 16 composed of light metal chlorides contg. lithium chloride. The temp. is held below the m.p. of uranium. The magnesium may be used in the form of magnesium-cadmium alloy, and the temp. is held below the evaporating temps. of magnesium and cadmium. Af first, the components of the molten salt are jointly melted to form a molten salt eutectic mixture 16. Then, uranium 35 is separated, thereafter, the reaction product is recovered, and recycling is executed.
