PURPOSE: To produce a large-sized or square-shaped vacuum insulating article economically and advantageously without requiring inner and outer walls to be increased in thickness and spacers to be provided in a large number by a method wherein insulating material is filled between the inner and outer cylindrical walls to remove air therefrom.

CONSTITUTION: A fixed metal die 8 is provided inside an inner cylinder 4. An outer cylinder 5 is divided into a cylinder forming member 9 and a bottom forming member 12 and each of the forming members 9 and 12 is provided with a separate pressing metal die 10. Insulating material 6 is provided between the inner cylinder 4 and the forming members 9 and 12 of the outer cylinder 5 and the inner cylinder 4, the insulating material 6 and the forming members 9 and 12 are pressed together by the fixed metal die 8 and the pressing die 10, thereby compressing the insulating material 6 to a predetermined density. Thereafter, the forming members 9 and 12 are joined together.
