PURPOSE: To obtain a titled low-foaming emulsion having excellent polymerization stability, by emulsion-polymerizing a vinyl type monomer in the presence of a polyoxyalkylene styrenized or benzylated phenyl ether sulfate ester salt.
CONSTITUTION: A vinyl type monomer is emulsion-polymerized in the presence of (A) a polyoxyalkylene styrenized and/or benzylated phenyl ether sulfate ester salt and, if necessary, (B) at least one compound selected from the group consisting of other anionic surfactants, nonionic surfactants and water-soluble oligomers. As the sulfate ester (A) which can be used, there can be mentioned compounds represented by formulas I, II and III, wherein m1 and m2 are each 1W3, m3 and m4 are each 1 or 2, m3+m4=2W3, A1, A2 and A3are each a C2W3 alkylene, n1, n2 and n3 are each 1W100, and M1, M2 and M3 are each an alkali metal, ammonium or an amine cation.
