Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain the title polymer useful as a flocculating agent, etc., having excellent industrial handleability by making methanol exist on the surface of a specific water-insoluble copolymer, bringing hydrogen chloride gas into contact with the copolymer in a hydrous solid state in a vapor phase and hydrolyzing at >=a specific temperature. CONSTITUTION:Methanol [5-70wt.% based on polymer component] is made to exist on the surface of water-insoluble copolymer (preferably granulated into 1-10mm under pressure) prepared by subjecting N-vinylformamide and acrylonitrile in a molar ratio of (20/80)-(70/30) to precipitation polymerization and the copolymer in a hydrous solid state (usually 15-50wt.% water content) is brought into contact with hydrogen chloride gas (preferably 0.9-2.0 mols based on 1mol formamide group) in a vapor phase and hydrolyzed (preferably >=60% hydrolysis ratio) at >=40 deg.C, preferably 40-120 deg.C to give the objective polymer.
