PURPOSE: To form a rim of uniform and smooth thickness by making a rim base through ironing of the cylindrical part of a blank material then roll forming the same thereby forming the rim.
CONSTITUTION: A wheel made of aluminum for automobiles is produced with good accuracy. For example, a mandrel 16 is fitted into the cylindrical part 10 of a cup- shaped member 9. While the mandrel 16 is rotated, an ironing roll 18 is contacted under pressure with the outside circumference of the cylindrical part 10 and the roll 18 is moved while it is ironing the cylindrical part 10, thereby forming a cylindrical part 10a. This is extremely uniform in thickness and the surface is smooth. Thence, a rim part is formed by a forming inside roll 3 and outside roll 4 or a traversing outside roll 14. The cylindrical part 10 is reduced in wall thickness to permit easy forming, thus the extremely uniform rim part is formed. It is also possible to draw and iron the cup-shaped member from a plate material or to iron a cylindrical member of an H shape in section.
