Abstract:

To provide a compact projection image display apparatus where a variable diaphragm mechanism is installed in an appropriate position.

Regarding the projection image display apparatus where illuminating light from a light source 15 is modulated by an image forming element 3 so as to form image light, then, the image light is projected to the surface of a screen 7 by a projection optical system 5 including at least three curved mirrors 25, 28 and 30, the variable diaphragm mechanism 26 for varying the light intensity of the projection image by inserting/retreating a light shielding plate 40 in/from the optical path is arranged between the first curved mirror 25 and the second curved mirror 28 arranged in order from the image forming element 3.
