To provide a projection type display device using a reflection type light valves, which ensures improved contrast of a projection image without disposing 1/4-wavelength phase plates between polarization beam splitters and reflection type light valves.
Light from a light source is polarized and split by the polarizing and splitting sections of the polarization beam splitters and then the resultant rays of light are deflected by being totally reflected by total reflection faces. Total reflection films are formed on the total reflection faces. Each total reflection film imparts a 90°-phase difference to the P-polarization and S-polarization rays of light made incident on it. The rays of light totally reflected by the total reflection faces are made incident on the corresponding reflection type light valves and modulated. The modulated rays of light reflected and emitted from the reflection type light valves are again made incident on the total reflection faces and reflected so as to be made incident on the polarizing and splitting sections of the polarization beam splitters.
