To provide a projection type display device capable of mitigating complicatedness in a manufacturing step.
A reflection type polarization conversion film 27 has both of a function of converting at least one part of polarization direction in s-polarized light emitted from a polarization separation film 26 into polarization direction of p-polarized light (function as a retardation plate) and a function of reflecting the p-polarized light having the converted polarization direction and emitting the p-polarized light from a polarization conversion element 23 (function as a reflection film). Therefore, it becomes possible to constitute the retardation plate and the reflection film, for example, in the conventional configuration as one member without disposing them separately. As the result, the number of components of the polarization conversion element 23 can be reduced and the complicatedness in the manufacturing step can be mitigated. In its turn, the reduction of the number of components of the polarization conversion element 23 links to the mitigation of the complicatedness in the manufacturing step of a projector.
