To provide a projection type image displaying apparatus that enables the range of color reproduction to be expanded even when a luminous body having a broad spectrum is used.
A projection type image displaying apparatus 100 comprises a light source unit 10 having an exciting light source (light source 10B1) that emits exciting light rays and a solid light source (light source 10B2 or light source 10R) that emits predetermined color component light rays; a color wheel 20; a plurality of DMDs 40; and a projection unit 50. The color wheel 20 has a rotating face 21 provided with a luminous body that emits luminous light rays corresponding to the exciting light rays. A spectroscopic element (prism 220 or prism 230) separates a main component of the spectrum having a prescribed wavelength, out of the luminous light rays, to a first optical path leading to a first light modulation element (DMD 40G) and separates the remaining part of the spectrum, out of the luminous light rays, to a second optical path leading to a second light modulation element (DMD 40B or DMD 40R).
