A rear projection type video display unit has a housing (5) for fixedly housing projection lenses (2, 3) for enlarging and projecting an image displayed on a video display element onto a transmission type screen (6), a light path folding mirror (7) for folding a projection luminous flux from the projection lenses (2, 3) halfway, and a drive circuit for displaying a video on the video display element. Assuming that a diagonal dimension of the transmission type screen (6) is SS (inch), a depth of the housing (5) is D (inch), and a length from the lower edge of the transmission type screen (6) to the lower edge of the housing (5) is L (inch), the following conditions are satisfied: 40<SS, D<SS/3, L<SS/12.
