To provide a projection type video display device which can efficiently display an image by reducing optical loss in the device and is suitable for the reduction in cost of the device as well.
The projection type video display device includes: a light source radiating white light; a rod lens collecting and emitting light from the light source; a rotary color filter arranged in the vicinity of the emission surface of the rod lens and selectively transmitting or reflecting the specified color light of the white light; a DMD having a plurality of pixels and modulating incident light according to an image signal; an illumination optical element forming illumination light for collecting the light emitted from the rotary color filter and projecting it to the DMD; a projection lens projecting the image formed by the DMD; and a controller performing control, so as to synchronize the rotation of the rotary color filter with image display by the DMD. In the projection type video display device, in a part of the rotary color filter, a light emitting surface is formed by the light from the emission surface of the rod lens and the illumination optical element is arranged to have an approximately conjugate relation with the light emitting surface on the rotary color filter.
