To provide a projector by which external video information which is played while a lens shutter 50 is at a closed state can be viewed later, and a method of controlling the same.
The projector includes: a lamp 11 which is a light source; an external video information input unit 62 in which the external video information which should be displayed is input from the outside; the lens shutter 50 which can shield video light from the lamp 11; a shutter opened and closed state detection sensor 51 which detects opened and closed states of the lens shutter 50; and a control unit 20 which stores the external video information which is input after the lens shutter 50 enters the closed state in a video information memory device 61 according to that the lens shutter 50 enters the closed state.
