To provide a projector having a structure to be easily miniaturized even in the case of setting so that smooth and good-quality moving picture display may be obtained.
The projector comprises a light source device 110, an integrator rod 120, a relay optical system 140, a color separation optical system 200, liquid crystal display devices 400R, 400G and 400B and a projection optical system 600, and further comprises a rotary plate 20 arranged near the light source device 110 side of the light incident surface of the integrator rod 120 and functioning as an optical shutter which intermittently intercepts light so that the light with which the display devices 400R, 400G and 400B are irradiated may be intercepted synchronizing with the screen write-in frequency of the display devices 400R, 400G and 400B. The relay optical system 140 is constituted to form at least one of images in the light emitting areas of a light emitting tube 112 between two dichroic mirrors 210 and 220 of the color separation optical system 200A.
