In a projector 1000 which includes: an illumination device 100 including a light source device 10 that includes a solid light source for generating excitation light, a fluorescent layer for generating fluorescent light from a part of the excitation light from the solid light source and a collimator optical system 30 which collimates light from the fluorescent layer, and emits the collimated light; a light modulation device 200 which modulates light from the illumination device 100 according to image information; and a projection optical system 300 which projects the light from the light modulation device 200, the illumination device 100 further includes a polarization conversion element 50 which polarizes and converts the light from the light source device 10, and reflection means 40 which is arranged between the light source device 10 and the polarization conversion element 50, makes light in the vicinity of the optical axis of the light source device 10 transmit therethrough, and reflects light in the peripheral portion apart from the optical axis of the light source device 10 toward the fluorescent layer.
