A projector 1 includes: an illumination optical system 2 for emitting first light (green light L2); a reflection type first liquid crystal panel 27 for modulating the first light emitted from the illumination optical system 2; a first wire grid element 26 that is arranged at a position on which the light modulated and reflected by the first liquid crystal panel 27 is incident, has a plurality of metal wires extending substantially parallel to a light emission surface 27A of the first liquid crystal panel 27, and is inclined at an angle of 37° or more and less than 45° with respect to a normal direction of the light emission surface 27A of the first liquid crystal panel 27; and a projection optical system 7 which projects the first light that modulated by the first liquid crystal panel 27 and reflected by the first wire grid element 26.
