The prophylactic agent for arteriosclerosis comprises an extract of pine bark and the extract of pine bark comprises proanthocyanidin in an amount of <95 wt.% expressed in terms of dried weight. The extract of pine bark in the prophylactic agent for arteriosclerosis is preferably obtained by hot water extraction and the extract comprises, preferably further, oligomeric proanthocyanidin (OPC) in an amount of ≥20 wt.% expressed in terms of dried weight and catechins in an amount of ≥5 wt.% expressed in terms of dry weight.
