To provide a protective device for an automobile in which noise generation is avoided when winding up a surface-forming material.
The surface-forming material is disposed on a winding shaft 4 pivoted in a housing to be wound therearound and withdrawn therefrom between a non-operating position and a protective position. The winding shaft receives torque in the winding direction from a winding spring 5, and the winding force of the winding spring is reduced by a controller. The controller comprises a spiral body 9 and a control finger 7 radially movable with respect to a winding axis W guided in the spiral body. The control finger is pressed against spirally extending guide webs 11, 12 of the spiral body 9 by a spring force at least in the drawing direction. Fixing means 14, 15 correspond to the control finger, and the fixing means holds the control finger on the inside of the surface-forming material in the winding direction.
