PURPOSE: To provide the subject protective device made up of specific side support members and specific fixing member to enable a platinum vessel to be placed, disassembled or repaired in an oven without heightening oven height and requiring powder use when the vessel for melting glass is to be protected.
CONSTITUTION: A cylinder along the contour of a vessel for melting glass is longitudinally divided, cutouts 2A, 4A to avoid a glass discharge nozzle connected to the vessel are formed respectively at the lower ends of the resultant half-cylinders, and the periphery of the opening of the vessel is provided with a member for reinforcing the opening. The upper ends of the respective support members 2, 4 for the respective half-cylinders are provided with level differences 2B, 4B which are engaged with a fixing ring member 6. The platinum vessel is put into the oven through an openable left side door and placed at the center of a recess 1a. The side support members 2, 4 are also put into the oven along the same direction and allowed to fall into the recess 1a so as to sandwich the vessel nearly rectangularly to its side. At this time, a discharge pipe is drawn out via the cutouts 2A, 4A and engaged with the fixing ring 6.
