PURPOSE: To provide the subject compound useful as a key production intermediate for hydantocidin known as an excellent herbicidal substance.
CONSTITUTION: The compound of formula I (R1 to R4 are H or hydroxyl- protecting group; X is hydroxymethyl, carboxyl, carbamoyl or allophanoyl), e.g. 1,5-di-O-benzyl-1-α-allophanoyl-1-dehydro-2,3-O-isopropylidene-β-ribofuranose. The compound can be produced by reacting a 1,2:4,5-di-O-isopropylidene-β-D- psicopyranose with an acetal derivative (preferably 2,2dimethoxypropane) in a ketone solvent in the presence of an acid catalyst at -20 to +50°C, protecting the 6-hydroxyl group of the resultant compound of formula II (R2' and R3' are H, 1-6C chain alkyl, etc.) preferably with benzyl group, reacting the produced compound of formula III with an alcohol (preferably benzyl alcohol) in the presence of an acid catalyst and oxidizing the reaction product.
