To provide a pulley for a continuously variable transmission capable of improving abrasion resistance of a sliding surface, by restraining a fatigue crack of the sliding surface of the pulley by a repetitive load from a belt and sliding heating with the belt.
This pulley for the continuously variable transmission has at least a part being wrapped by a metallic belt and at least the sliding surface 2a sliding on the metallic belt, and uses a material selected from chrome steel or chrome molybdenum steel regulated by JIS G 4053 as steel of a raw material. Surface roughness of the sliding surface 2a is set to Hv 800 or more. The pulley for the continuously variable transmission has at least a surface layer 21 including the sliding surface 2a to which residual compressive stress of at least 1,200 MPa or more is applied, a residual austenite layer 22 having residual austenite by 15-40 vol.% in a part of 20 μm or more in the depth direction from the sliding surface 2a, and an internal residual compressive stress part 23 of applying residual compressive stress of 300 MPa or less to a part of 30 μm or more in the depth direction from the sliding surface 2a.
