Abstract:

PURPOSE: To purify the subject compound in remarkably high yield and purity in comparison with cases using conventional recrystallization solvents or in comparison with conventional distillation purification methods by using methanol as a recrystallization solvent.
CONSTITUTION: Methanol is used as a recrystallization solvent to purify the objective compound (the carbodiimide compound). The method for purifying the 2,6-diisopropylphenylcarbodiimide comprises e.g. adding the methanol to the crude carbodiimide compound, heating the mixture at an inner temperature of 60-64°C with stirring, gradually lowering the inner temperature to 30-35°C to deposit the crystals, further lowering the inner temperature to -10 to 5°C with stirring, allowing the suspension to stand for the separation of the suspension into two solid and liquid layers, filtering off the solid layer to obtain the purified carbodiimide compound containing the methanol, if necessary, further adding methanol to the separated carbodiimide compound crystals, repeating the recrystallization process, melting the crystals at 60-70°C, bubbling nitrogen gas in the melted product to remove the methanol, and subsequently heating the left compound at 80-90°C to remove water.
