To purify acetone by adding an ether having a specific number of carbon atoms to the acetone containing a very small amount of an alcohol, distilling the resultant mixture, obtaining the acetone with a reduced content of the alcohol from the column bottom of a distillation column and efficiently removing the very small amount of the alcohol.
Acetone containing a very small amount of an alcohol as an impurity (e.g. methanol) is fed from an acetone feed passage 1 into a distillation column 3 and a 4C ether (hereinafter referred to as the third compound) (e.g. diethyl ether) is passed through the third compound feed passage 2 and added thereto. The distillation treatment thereof is then carried out to distill off a fraction comprising the acetone containing a concentrated alcoholic component and the third compound from the column top of the distillation column 3 through an overhead liquid takeout passage 4. The acetone with the reduced content of the alcohol is obtained from the lower part of the distillation column 3 through a bottom product takeout passage 5 to thereby efficiently separate and remove the alcoholic component from the acetone containing the very small amount of the alcohol.
