Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide an efficient purification process for a crude aromatic dicarboxylic acid.
CONSTITUTION: Trimethylammonium terephthalate is treated with active carbon in an aqueous solution to effect purification. Then, steam (100 to 200°C at 1 to 15 atm pressure) is blown into the solution to effect thermal decomposition and the precipitated terephthalic acid is filtered, rinsed with water and dried. The liberated trimethylamine is recycled to the next batch to obtain terephthalic acid of 99.9 % purity in 95% yield. There is substantially no consumption of the amine in the regeneration treatment.
