PURPOSE: To enable continuous desulfurization and denitrogenation of an aromatic oil under a low consumption of hydrogen for a long period while preventing lowering of the catalytic activity by bringing the aromatic oil into contact with a hydrogenation catalyst in the presence of a hydrogen-donative solvent in a specified condition.
CONSTITUTION: One or more aromatic oils of coal-tar oil, tar oil, coal-tar pitch, liquefied coal oil, an oil obtained by heat treatment or solvent extraction thereof, etc., are brought into contact with a hydrogenation catalyst preferably composed of an oxide or a sulfide of a VIB group or VIII group element supported on a fire-resistant inorganic oxide carrier in the presence of a hydrogen-donative solvent consisting of a hydrogenated aromatic compound such as tetralin, decalin or cyclohexylbenzene at a temperature and pressure (e.g. 380-400°C and 50-200kg/cm2G)≥those at the critical point of the above mentioned solvent, thuspurifying the aromatic oils.
