PURPOSE: To obtain a high-purity crystalline salt of clavulanic acid by adding tertiary octylamine to a dried and decolored solution of the clavulanic acid in an organic solvent and crystallizing the formed crystalline tertiary octylamine slat.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution of an impure clavulanic salt at 0-10°C is acidified and the clavulanic acid is extracted into a water-immisible organic solvent such as ethyl acetate to provide a solution of the clavulanic acid in the organic solvent, which is then dried and decolorized. Tertiary octylamine (solution) is subsequently added to the resultant dried and decolorized solution of the clavulanic acid in the organic solvent at 0-10°C to cause the formation of a substantially pure crystalline tertiary octylamine slat of the clavulanic acid, which is then crystallized. The crystallization is carried out by dissolving the tertiary amine salt of the clavulanic acid in an organic solvent (e.g. isopropanol) containing water in an amount of 0-5% and adding an alcohol solution of a suitable ion carrier thereto.
