PURPOSE: To purify long-chain dicarboxylic acids produced by fermentation, economically and safely, by treating with a lower aliphatic alcohol, tetrahydrofuran, or their aqueous solution.
CONSTITUTION: Long-chain dicarboxylic acids, esp. 10W18C dicarboxylic acids or their salts, obtained by the fermentation of hydrocarbons such as n-paraffins, with microorganisms such as yeasts, fungi, etc., are dissolved in a lower aliphatic alcohol such as methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, etc. or tetrahydrofuran, or their aqueous solution. After removing the insoluble components from the solution, the long-chain dicarboxylic acids are separated from the solution either by distilling off the solvent or by adding water or an aqueous solution of a mineral acid to the solution.
