Title:
PURIFICATION OF NAPHTHALENE
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS5481247
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain the title high-quality compound with a low sulfur content smoothly and easily while reusing a catalyst readily, by treating crude naphthalene containing thionaphthene with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a metallic oxide catalyst.

CONSTITUTION: Crude naphthalene containing thionaphthene (T) is brought into contact with 2W60 wt.% based on T of a metallic oxide, e.g. Mo, V, or W oxide, at 80W90°C, and reacted with hydrogen peroxide at about 80°C. The reaction product thus obtained is separated into an aqueous phase containing the catalyst and an oil phase, from which naphthalene is obtained by distillation.
