PURPOSE: To prepare an easily polymerizable title compound useful as a momomer suitable for the production of a heat resistant polymer having excellent mechanical properties, transparency, and moldability, by distilling a norbornene derivative in th presence of copper powder, thereby removing the component which is toxic to polymerization catalysts from the derivative.
CONSTITUTION: A norbornene derivative having a polar group (N-substituted amide, imide, substituted with C1, I, cyano, ≤ 20C ester, amino, ≤20C hydrocarbon residue), or ≤C hydrocarbon residue, substituted with ≤10 polar groups, e.g. formula I or II (W1,X1,Y1,Z1, and W2,X2,Y2,Z2, are H, ≤ 20C hydrocar bon residue, polar group, etc.; at least one in each group is polar group), is purified by distilling in the presence of copper powder. The distillation is carried out using 0.01-10 parts by weight of copper powder, based on 100 parts of the norbornen derivative, under atmospheric or reduced pressure, in an inert gas atomsphere.
