PURPOSE: To obtain a novel compound which can control a wide range of weeds in paddy fields with reduced application dose without chemical damage to rice plant.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of the formula (R1 and R2 each is a 1-4C alkyl; R3 is H, a 1-4C alkyl; X1 is a halogen, a 1-4C (halo)alkyl; X2 is H, a halogen, a 1-4C (halo)alkyl; Q is H, -SO2-R4; R4 is a 1-8C alkyl), for example, 5,8- dimethyl-4-methoxyimino-6-(1,3-dimethyl-5-hydroxypyrazol-4-yl)carbonylchroman. The compound of the formula is prepared by reaction of an aromatic carboxylic acid derivative with a pyrazole in the presence of a dehydrating agent such as N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide and a base. It can be applied to control weeds, for example, barnyard grass, joint weed, tooth cup, MIZUGAYATSURI (Cyperus serotinus) or the like.
