A pyroelectric infrared detection element D includes: a pyroelectric part 11 including a pair of a lower electrode layer and an upper electrode layer and a ferroelectric material disposed between the pair of the lower electrode layer and the upper electrode layer; a voltage application part 12 for applying a voltage of a predetermined voltage value Vi between the pair of the lower electrode layer and the upper electrode layer; and a measurement part 13 for measuring a predetermined physical amount relating to the amount of charge generated in the pyroelectric part 11 from a voltage-applied polarization state where the voltage application part 12 applies the voltage of the predetermined voltage value Vi between the pair of the lower electrode layer and the upper electrode layer until a natural polarization state.
