Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a quanternized copolymer useful as an ingredient in hair styling compositions, which has good setting and caring characteristics with superior skin characteristics by free-radical copolymerization of a specific monomeric mixture.
SOLUTION: The objective quaternized copolymer is obtained from free- radical copolymerization of a monomeric mixture comprising (A) 5-50 (wt.)% 1-vinylimidazole or a quaternized 1-vinylimidazole, (B) 20-80% N- vinylcaprolactam, (C) 10-60% N-vinylpyrrolidone, and (D) 0-30% other free- radically polymerizable monomer which has a glass transition temperature over 20°C as a homopolymer, preferably such as t-butyl acrylate. If non- quaternizd 1-vinylimidazole in component (A) is used, the objective copolymer is obtained by quaternization of the polymer later. Further, the component (A) is preferably 3-ethyl-1-vinylimidazolium chloride or its methylsulfate.
