PURPOSE: To obtain quinoline-3-carboxylic acid amide useful as a herbicide which can be applied by pre-germination and post-germination treating methods.
CONSTITUTION: This is a compd. of formula I (wherein R1 is H, a 1-25C alkyl, a 3-25C alkenyl, a 3-25C alkynyl or a 3-8C cycloalkyl; R2 is H, OH, a 1-8C alkoxy, a 3-8C alkenyloxy, a di-1-4C alkylamino, a 1-25C alkyl, a 3-25C alkenyl, etc.; R1 and R2 combine together with each other to form an alkylene chain having 4-7 members; each of R3-R6 is H, a 1-4C alkyl, a 1-4C alkoxy, a 1-4C alkylthio, a halogen, CN, NO2, etc.; X is O or S) and its non-pollutant salt, such as 5-fluoro-4-hydroxy-2-oxo-quinoline-3-carboxylic acid-t-butyramide.Na salt. The compd. is obtained by allowing a qinoline-3-carboxylic ester of formula II (wherein R7 is a lower alkyl) to react with a substd. amine of formula III optionally in the presence of an org. solvent.
