NEW MATERIAL:A quinoline derivative shown by the formula I (X is Br, I, lower alkyl, or trifluoromethyl; R is H or lower alkyl).
EXAMPLE: 2-[4-(6-bromo-2-quinolyloxy)phenoxy)]propionic aicd methyl.
USE: A herbicide. Having improved weeding effect especially on a plant of true grasses. The herbicide is different from a well-known conventional herbicide in its chemical structure.
PROCESS: A 2-chloroquinoline derivative shown by the formula II is reacted with hydroquinone monobenzyl ether in the presence of anhydrous potassium carbonate and dimethyl sulfoxide to give a compound shown by the formula III, which is dissolved in a mixed solvent and hydrogenated to give a compound shown by the formula IV. This compound is reacted with a compound shown by the formula V (Y is halogen) under reflux in the presence of K2CO3 to give a compound shown by the formula I, which is hydrolyzed to give a compound shown by the formula I wherein R is H.
