NEW MATERIAL:A quinone compound of formula I (R is methyl or methoxyl; Y is formyl, carboxyl, 2W5C alkoxycarbonyl, carbamoyl, mono- or di- 1W4C alkylcarbamoyl or carbamoyloxymethyl) or a hydroquinone derivative thereof.
USE: Useful as a medicine or an intermediate therefor, having the action on improvement in metabolism of polyfunctional unsaturated fatty acids, particularly the infibitory action on the production of fatty acid peroxide or inhibitory action on the production of slow reacting substance-anaphylaxis (SRS-A) known as a substance causing immediate allergy, and useful for treating or preventing bronchial asthma, allergosis, hypertension, cerebral thrombosis, ischemic cardiac infarction, coronary blood vessel disorder, etc.
PROCESS: A compound of formula II is subjected to the oxidative demethylation reaction to give the aimed compound of formula I . The oxidative demethylation reaction is carried out in water or a hydrous organic solvent at -10W+30°C in the presence of AgO-nitric acid.
