PURPOSE: To support a rack shaft positively while maintaining the appropriate meshed state with a pinion without impeding the movement for steering so as to prevent the generation of noise caused by reverse input from the rack shaft.

CONSTITUTION: A pinion 20 is provided at a part of a pinion shaft supported inside of a gear housing and connected to a steering wheel. A rack shaft 3 connected to lateral steering wheels is disposed on one side of the pinion shaft 2, and rack teeth 30 formed on the outside of the rack shaft 3 are meshed with the pinion 20. The tips of support yokes 1, 1 slidably fitted into separate mounting holes 10, 10 are brought into contact with the mutually different circumferential positions on the back face side to the meshed part of the rack shaft 3 with the pinion 20. These support yokes 1, 1 are batch-energized by a pressing spring 13 through a pressing plate 11 provided between the base ends of both support yokes 1, 1 so as to press the rack shaft 3 to the meshed part with the pinion 20, and the rack shaft 3 is supported slidably in the longitudinal direction of the shaft while maintaining the appropriate meshed state between the rack teeth 30 and the pinion 20.
