To provide a rack and pinion type steering system which eliminates necessity for adjustment of a rack guide clearance and retains durability of a spring receiver.

In this rack and pinion type steering system, an energizing force of a spring 8 urges a rack shaft 3 of a rack guide 5 that is slidably fit to the inside of a cylinder 4 formed in a housing 1, against a pinion shaft 2. A part of a spring receiving member 7 is installed on a stepped portion formed in the inner peripheral face of the cylinder 4, with a displacement to the axially outward direction being restricted. A retaining member 10 for restricting a displacement of the spring receiving member 7 in the rotational direction is press-fit into the cylinder 4.
