To provide a radiation irradiation apparatus which irradiates a diseased site with an appropriate dose of radiation and irradiates the diseased site with radiation by setting a region irradiated with radiation corresponding to characteristics of the diseased site to reduce the dose of radiation emitted to healthy tissues around the diseased site.
In this radiation irradiation apparatus, a therapeutic X-ray generating source 2 is fixed on a supporting base 12 through a rotating mechanism 13 equipped with two mutually-perpendicular rotation axes. The rotating mechanism 13 controls to orient the X rays emitted from the source 2 in a manner to make the irradiation axis face the isocenter where the center of the diseased site to be irradiated is located. Independently from the rotating mechanism, the position of the source 2 is adjusted to the supporting base 12 in the directions of two axes through a positioning mechanism 11. The irradiation axis of the X rays and the central axis of a multileaf collimator fixed to the supporting base are oriented to the isocenter by the adjustments by two mechanisms.
