To eliminate the need for expensive cobalt 60 and improve the utilization efficiency of a spent nuclear fuel by using the spent nuclear fuel to irradiate an object that needs to be subject to irradiation with radiation and arranging the spent nuclear fuel along a carrying device.
A used fuel 1 still radiating γ rays before being stored at a fuel storage part is carried into an irradiation room 13 of a radiation irradiation facility 3 and is arranged at both sides of a carrying device 17. An object 16 that needs to be subjected to radiation being stored at a storage space 19 is carried to a storage space 20 of an irradiation container 15, and the object 16 is loaded into the container 15 at a space 23 of the container 15 and is placed at the device 17 and is moved. Then, the object 16 loaded into the container 15 is carried from a storage part 12 to the irradiation room 13, where γ rays being discharged from the nuclear fuel 1 being arranged at both sides of the device 17 are applied. The use of the nuclear fuel 1 for irradiation with radiation eliminates the need of expensive cobalt 60. Also, by installing a radiation application facility 3 adjacent to the dry middle storage facility of the nuclear fuel 1, the utilization efficiency of the nuclear fuel 1 can be improved.
