PURPOSE: To specify a correct light measurement area by providing a 1st input means which specifies one mode in plural areas on a sheet and inputs it and a 2nd input means which inputs a desired image signal range.

CONSTITUTION: A pre-read means 1a and a main read means 1b are provided and this reader has the 1st input means 3b which specifies and inputs one of read condition and image processing condition modes to a condition arithmetic means 3a and the 2nd input means 3e which specifies the desired image signal range centering on a mean value to the condition arithmetic means 3a. In this case, the use of an area selection mode is inputted from the 1st input means before pre-reading or main reading operation and information attached to other area selection modes can be inputted from the 2nd input means after an image is displayed on a display means. Consequently, even when a subject image is recorded at a position other than a estimated position on the recording sheet, the correct light measurement area can be specified.
