To provide an inexpensive radiaographic image reader that uses a general head-on type photomultiplier, reduces the phenomenon of tailing, and improves the image reproducibility.

This radiographic image reader radiates exciting light to an accelerated phosphorescence phosphor sheet on which radiation image information is recorded, and converts accelerated phosphorescence light guided by a light guide into an electric signal with the photomultiplier. The radiographic image reader includes at least one of a shielding means for shielding the accelerated phosphorescence light entering a peripheral region of a photoelectric surface of the photomultiplier and an attenuating means for attenuating the accelerated phosphorescence light.
