To improve cooling performance of a ram air fan (RAF) motor 20 in an aircraft environmental control system.
A ram air fan device 10 is provided for making up for ram air, for example, when an aircraft is on the ground. The device includes: an RAF 12 disposed at a fan inlet 14; and the RAF motor 20 connected via an RAF shaft 22. A pressure difference between an inlet header and the fan inlet 14 causes a cooling flow 32 to flow through the RAF motor 20 to cool a bearing of the RAF motor 20 and a stator winding 28. A blower 46 including a plurality of blower blades 50 is disposed between an RAF hub 38 and a cap 44, and the axial cooling flow 32 having passed through a cooling opening 42 of the RAF hub 38 is changed direction to a radially outwardly directed blower flow 52. As a result, a mass flow of the cooling flow 32 increases to improve cooling of the RAF motor 20.
