Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain the title copolymer excellent in heat resistance and mechanical strengths by effecting the random copolymerization of ethylene with a specified aromatic-containing norbornene to form a product of a specified structure and a specified intrinsic viscosity.
CONSTITUTION: Ethylene is copolymerized with an aromatic-containing norbornene represented by formula III [wherein p is 0 or greater; q and r are each 0-2; R1 to R15 are each H, halogen, an aliphatic, alicyclic or aromatic hydrocarbon group or alkoxy; R5 (or R6) and R9 (or R7) may be combined with each other directly or through a 1-3C alkylene group and being in the form of an isomer mixture having a molar ratio A/B of 80/20-0/100 (wherein A is an endo isomer of formula I (wherein X1 is a part of formula V in the compound of formula III, and B is an exo isomer of formula II) to produce the title polymer comprising 10-95mol% structural units derived from ethylene and 90-5mol% structural units derived from the aromatic-containing norbornene each of which has a structure of formula IV and having an intrinsic viscosity of 0.05-10dl/g (in decalin at 135°C).
